MSECE PROGRAM:
Main Research Areas
Communications and Signal Processing
 |
Optical communication and signal processing are two of the major core areas of research in the department. The most specific topics of research are optical fiber communication systems, image processing, pattern recognition with applications in face and voice identification, detection and estimation with applications in radar and sonar array processing, computational and optimization methods, and communication networks. |
VLSI and Nanoscale Optoelectronics
 |
Research areas in VLSI includes ASIC, analog/ digital/mixed signal VLSI design, simulation, and testing. Research in the Nanoscale optoelectronics focuses on the design and modeling of novel nanostructured optoelectronic devices including lasers and solar cells. The research is multidisciplinary in nature spanning several areas in electrical engineering, e.g., semiconductor physics, optics, electronics and photovoltaics. |
Medical Instrumentation and Control Systems
 |
There is an on-going collaboration with UMD Medical School to carry out various research projects related to medical instrumentation and bio-medical engineering. Examples are diagnostic stethoscope and active noise cancellation of incubator noise. Research in control area includes adaptive control, system theory, computer-aided control system design and optimization, mobile mechanisms, distributed control in safety-critical systems, autonomous vehicles for outdoor navigation, intelligent systems programming, and artificial intelligence applications using neural networks, genetic algorithms, and fuzzy logic. |
Intelligent Transportation Systems
 |
Many faculty members are involved in intelligent transportation systems related research in collaboration with the State of Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), and the Northland Advanced Transportation System Research Laboratories (NATSRL). There is an ongoing collaboration with the Department of Mechanical and Industrial engineering within this area of specialty. |
Laboratory Facilities and Resources
 |
The ECE department is equipped with extensive Windows and UNIX based
computing facilities for both education and research. Licensed software
packages available for students include Matlab, Mathematica, ORCADPSpice,
LabView, Quartus, Cadence, etc. Laboratories in the areas of
digital circuits, analog circuits, microcontrollers, power systems, robotics,
communications, control, VLSI systems, and computer networks are
available. The laboratories can be used for construction and testing of
experimental prototypes. |
