CONGRARATUATIONS TO TWO ECE FACULTY PROMOTIONS

Dr. Mohammed Hasan, was promoted to Associate Professor effective
fall 2002. Dr. Hasan began with the ECE Department in
September 1997. He received a B.S. degree in Mathematics
from the University of Baghdad, Iraq, and an M.S. degree in
Electrical Engineering, from Colorado State University.
Dr. Hasan has a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics
from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering,
from Colorado State University. His research interests include
modeling and estimation of random processes and their applications
to signal processing and biomedical research, adaptive filtering
and sinusoidal estimation.

Dr. Taek Mu Kwon, was promoted to Professor effective fall 2002.
Dr. Kwon has been in the department since Fall 1988.
He received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from
Sung-jun University, Seoul, Korea, and his M.S.
and Ph.D. degrees from the Florida Institute of Technology.
Among others, Dr. Kwon's research interests include
neural networks, neural nets and fuzzy controllers, genetic algorithms,
digital signal processing, and computer networks.

Upward Bound Math/Science program (SUMS) Summer 2002

Upward Bound Math/Science , formally know as SUMS (Success in understanding Math and Science) The program is federally funded by the US Dept of ED through the College Of St Scholastica .

The Students in the program come from northeastern MN and nothwestern WI. The students are in grades 9-12. In the summer of 2002 they came to our ECE Department to apply their knowledge to small robots and have fun.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS ARE YOUNGER EVERY DAY
March 9th, 2001

The ECE Department was pleased to host a recent visit by the Cub Scout Pack from the Holy Rosary and Congdon Schools in Duluth. The scouts were learning about engineering for a merit badge. Four of our students: Tim Luthens, Pat Meyers, Brian Spranger, and Andy Witzke set up some nice hands-on laboratory demonstrations.

SCHOLARSHIP BANQUET REWARDS OUTSTANDING STUDENTS
September, 2000
The ECE Department was well represented at this years CSE Engineering scholarship banquet with several students receiving awards. The annual banquet distributed well over $25,000 to engineering majors here at UMD. Roughly 20 ECE students received awards.
