Welcome to Information Technology in Education

"Emerging interactive media are tools that can help provide rich curricula, powerful, pedagogies, and effective organizational structures; empower disenfranchised learners; and create strong links among schools, homes, workplaces, and communities." (Andrew Trotter, http://www.edweek.org/sreports/tc98/intro/in-n.htm).

Computer technology is one of the most powerful change forces to occur during the last quarter of a century. Due to its influence, people around the world are adjusting the way they communicate, learn, do research, conduct science and commerce, and create new knowledge, art and products. These adjustments have been, and continue to be, major and consistent motivators for societal transition from industrial to information age attitudes and practices. Consequently, adaptations in how individuals carry out the art and science of education are required.

The call for change in education to include information technology's advancements in teaching and learning is being met through various means in the Education Department at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD):

Due to the professional efforts of the UMD Education Department learning community and their partners, UMD teacher candidates are currently prepared to teach and learn with pre-kindergarten through secondary school students through technology enhanced classroom and field placement experiences. This preparation is multi-faceted:

  • UMD faculty model appropriate technology-inclusive pedagogy in campus classrooms
  • Faculty and teacher candidates use technology as a means of communication, assessment and productivity
  • Teacher candidates apply technology knowledge and skill in field placement settings.
  • Additionally, teacher candidates who wish to pursue information technology to a deeper level may earn a technology certificate through UMD's Educational Computing and Technology Certificate program (for further information, see Dr. David McCarthy's Web site or UMD's Continuing Education Web site).

A Community of Learners

This information technology section of the Education Department Web site is designed to be an essential and living component for faculty and students alike. Use it as a place to share your experiences, inspire your colleagues, and explore the many ways that technology can promote interactive and meaningful learning.
