Elementary Education: Overview
Block I
Required Classes (17 credits)
- ElEd 3113 - Learning Environments and Diverse Learning Communities (3 credits)
- ElEd 3325 - Language and Literacy (4 credits)
- ElEd 3331 - Children's Literature and Integrating Arts (4 credits)
- ElEd 3355 - Critical Thinking and Math (4 credits)
- ElEd 4400 - Professional/Portfolio Development (1 credit)
- SpEd 3310 - Introduction to Special Education for Elementary Education (1 credit)
Professional Day
- Held on the second Friday of each semester
- All Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary practicium Block I and Block II candidates are required to attend
- Professionalism and ethics are discussed
- School placements are given
- Contracts are signed
- Liability insurance is purchased
Field Placement
- All placements will be made locally, in northern Wisconsin, or on the Iron Range
- School diversity will be considered
- School practicums begin the third Friday of the semester
- Students will be at their placements all day, every day, during weeks 11 to 14
- Cooperating teachers evaluate each candidate
- UMD supervisor will visit each candidate at his/her school placement

- ElEd 3381 - Teaching American Indian Students in the Elementary Classroom (2 credits)
- ElEd 4344 - Teaching Science/Environmental Education (4 credits)
- ElEd 4345 - Instructional Strategies, Management and Assessment (3 credits)
- ElEd 4366 - Teaching Social Studies/Environmental Education (4 credits)
- SpEd 5310 - Adapting for Diverse Learners (4 credits)

Twin Cities Placements
- All placements will be made in schools with high cultural diversity
- All Elementary student teachers will receive a 16 week placement (K-6)
- Cooperating teachers evaluate each candidate
- UMD supervisor will visit each candidate six times at his/her school placement
Out of Area Placements
- This excludes the Twin Cities
