New Research & Laboratory Safety Online Training


All University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) students, faculty and staff who work in laboratories, or research areas, are required to take a safety training about work-related safety issues and practices.  Training is required when the employee is first hired and yearly thereafter.

The UMD Laboratory Safety Employee Training is a combination of in person laboratory-specific safety as well as on line tutorials and videos designed to cover a variety of topics and provide new employees, and students their required safety training and the opportunity to learn about ways to conduct work safely and protect their health from work associated hazards in compliance with all pertinent OSHA rules and regulations.

The UMD Environmental Health and Safety Office also provides as needed in-person training to familiarize employees with the OSHA Laboratory Standard Rules and Requirements.   For further information about this or to schedule an in person training, please call ext:7273.

If you are required to work at bio-containment levels 2 or 3 you should take
  1. Biosafety Risk Assessment
  2. Work with Animal at Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL2)
  3. Work with Animal at Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL3)
  4. Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Required training
If you work with any form of the following:
  • human blood;
  • human cell lines, body fluids (such as spinal fluid, synovial fluid, vaginal fluid, sperm);
  • and/or infectious agents (such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, rickettsia)
You will also need to complete the required OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training.   You may take the following on line module: Bloodborne and Other Pathogens


Radiation Safety

If you are working with or around radioactive materials, or if you require access to areas where radioactive materials are used or stored, you must complete the on-line training module.

Radiation Safety Orientation

Anyone who requires authorization to use or handle radioactive materials must also
successfully complete the on-line training module,

Radiation Safety for Radioactive Material Users

This module must also be completed for all medical, dental, veterinary and research x-ray
operators as part of their radiation safety training.

It is strongly recommended for anyone using radioactive materials in a biomedical
research laboratory to view the short video produced by the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute,

In addition to the training listed above, anyone seeking authorization to handle
radioactive materials must complete and document protocol-specific and lab-specific
training with an experienced individual, such as a lab supervisor or principal
investigator.  The Record of Training <http://www.dehs.umn.edu/PDFs/trainingrecord.pdf>
form may be used to document this initial orientation and the annual refresher training
that is required.
