Research & Laboratory Safety Online Training
All University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) students,
faculty and
staff who work in laboratories, or research areas, are required to take
a safety training about work-related safety issues and practices.
Training is required when the employee is first hired and yearly
thereafter.
The UMD Laboratory Safety Employee Training is a
combination of in person laboratory-specific safety as well as on
line tutorials and videos designed to cover a variety of topics and
provide new employees, and
students their required safety training and the opportunity to learn
about
ways to conduct work safely and protect their health from work
associated hazards in compliance with all pertinent OSHA rules and
regulations.
The UMD Environmental Health and Safety Office
also provides as needed in-person training to
familiarize employees with
the OSHA Laboratory Standard Rules and Requirements. For further
information about this or to schedule an in person training, please
call ext:7273.
Please use
the following to find out which training may apply to you or to
your employees.

If
you are required
to work
with animals at bio-containment levels 2 or 3 you should review the following:
- Biosafety
Risk
Assessment
- Work with Animal at
Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL2)
- Work with Animal at
Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL3)
- Institutional
Biosafety Committee (IBC) Required training
Additional
Informational training:
- Consequences for not
Adhering to Standard Microbiological Practices (funny)
If you work with any form of the following:
- human blood;
- human cell lines, body fluids
(such as
spinal fluid, synovial fluid, vaginal fluid, sperm);
- and/or infectious agents (such
as viruses, bacteria, fungi, rickettsia) or any Biosafety level 2 and 3
pathogens and other potentially infectious materials
You will also need to complete the required introductory Bloodborne
Pathogen
Training course on line module: The New Bloodborne
and Other Pathogens
Completion of this introductory training course
meets the requirements of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard
for Facilities Management employees.
The advanced course in conjunction with
the introductory class is intended for researchers (staff,
students, volunteers), health care workers, and students and volunteers
in the health sciences.
Completion of the two training
courses meets the requirements of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens
Standard , the University of Minnesota’s Administrative Procedure Activities
Involving Potentially Hazardous Biological Agents, and the
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) requirements for researchers
(staff, students, volunteers).
If
you anticipate using respirators on the job to protect yourself agains
animal
allergens or other air contaminants, and
have been approved for respirator use, you
should review the following:

If you are
working with or around radioactive materials, or if you require access
to areas where radioactive materials are used or stored, you must
complete the on-line training module.
Radiation
Safety Orientation (enrollment
key = RADSAFETY) This module serves as a prerequisite to
the training listed below.
For individuals required to handle radioactive materials. Also, all
research x-ray operators must successfully complete this module for
part of their radiation safety training.
Radiation
Safety for Radioactive Material Users (enrollment key =
RADMATERIAL)
It is strongly recommended for anyone using radioactive materials in a
biomedical
research laboratory to view the short video produced by the Howard
Hughes Medical
Institute,
Radiation Safety video
In addition to the training listed above, anyone seeking authorization
to handle
radioactive materials must complete and document protocol-specific and
lab-specific
training with an experienced individual, such as a lab supervisor or
principal
investigator. The Record of Training <http://www.dehs.umn.edu/PDFs/trainingrecord.pdf>
form may be used to document this initial orientation and the annual
refresher training
that is required.
