About
the RSO Program
To comply with state and
federal environmental
health and safety rules
and regulations, researchers must be covered by a written safety plan,
and have written safe operating procedures for their research
protocols. Safety training is required for all researchers,
initially
when hired and at least annually thereafter. The training must be
documented and records kept for at least 5 years. Research
laboratories and work areas must be inspected regularly to ensure
training has been effective, and researchers are complying with these
rules.
To help departments accomplish these goals, the Department of
Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS) has developed a Toolkit.
The toolkit provides information about
- The University's
Research Safety
Program;
- The Roles and Responsibilities of a
Research
Safety Officer (RSO);
- Development of a Research Safety Plan;
- Health and Safety Resources; and
- Training
for Research Safety Officers
The RSO is a key player in the
success of this
program, and therefore,
DEHS is asking departments to designate one person to be the RSO for
your
department. The RSO should have a technical background and be
familiar
with the research program of the department, in order to properly
fulfill the RSO's Roles and
Responsibilities.
