TXT-U is the University of Minnesota's emergency notification text messaging system. Students, faculty, and staff can stay informed about critical campus safety information by registering to receive TXT-U messages.
TXT-U will be used infrequently and specifically for real emergency situations.

How do I register for TXT-U?
- Click on the TXT-U icon above.
- Login with your University Internet ID (required) to complete the registration process.
- Enter your cell phone number.
- You may add other cell phone numbers by clicking "Click to add parents or others"
- You may want to check the box for a confirmation text message.
- Check each box for the campus(es) you wish to receive text alerts.
- Check the "I Agree" box.
- Click "Sign up Now!!"
Your registration information is private and will not be shared. You may unsubscribe at any time.
How can I unsubscribe from this service?
Click on the "Sign up for UMD TXT-U Alerts" box above, enter your cell phone number, and click "unsubscribe." Or, if you receive a text message from the TXT-U system, if you send a response back that includes "stop", "end", "quit", "unsubscribe" or "cancel," your account will be inactivated.
I don't want to get unnecessary text messages. Will TXT-U be used to send other kinds of information?
No. TXT-U will only be used to notify you about real emergency situations and campus closings.
Is TXT-U be available on all University campuses?
Yes. TXT-U is available on all campuses.
Does TXT-U cost anything to use?
There is no charge to receive TXT-U. However, your cell phone carrier might charge you to receive text messages, so please check your plan. If you have a plan for unlimited text messages, you will not be charged.
Will all cell phone carriers deliver TXT-U messages?
Yes. The University is using a service provider that works with all major cell phone providers. Text messages will be sent to your carrier for delivery to your phone. While it is extremely unlikely that you would not receive a TXT-U message, signal strength and other issues with your carrier could impact delivery.
I get cell phone service through a regional carrier. Will I be able to use TXT-U?
Some small regional cell carriers are not set up to properly receive and process bulk text messages. If you encounter a problem with your carrier, please contact 1-HELP (612-301-4357) or help@umn.edu with your cell number, the name of the carrier, and the nature of the problem.
Is TXT-U reliable?
TXT-U is an extremely reliable emergency text messaging notification system. However, due to carrier restrictions, signal limitations, and other factors, the University cannot guarantee that all phones registered for TXT-U will get every message sent.
I don't use text messages. Is TXT-U the only way the University will deliver emergency messages?
No. TXT-U is one of many ways the University provides notifications about emergencies, including tone alert radios, on-the-ground public safety personnel, e-mail, and the University home page (www.d.umn.edu). The goal is to communicate emergency information in many different ways to ensure that the most people receive notification as quickly as is possible.
What do I do when I receive a TXT-U emergency notification message?
TXT-U messages will give you instructions. If you are in class, tell the instructor about the message to announce it to others.
