UMD Department of Composition and Department of English Internship Program

Successfully completing your internship

You've done all the work to interview for and secure your internship. The Placement Agreement has been signed by you, your supervisor, and the Department of Composition Internship Coordinator. Following are points to keep in mind and deadlines you must meet during and following your internship.

Remember: Your internship, paid or unpaid, is your opportunity to gain valuable professional experience. Just as in any job, your attitude, work habits, and willingness to learn are your biggest assets when you begin.
Remember:
You are representing yourself, your employer, and UMD when you are on the job. You have agreed to the terms of the Placement Agreement and it is expected that you will deliver your highest quality of work.
Deadline 1: At the mid-point in your internship, print a copy of the Mid-term Intern Evaluation Form and request that your supervisor fill it out and give it back to you. Then submit it to the Internship Coordinator.
Deadline 2:

Near the end of your internship, print a copy of the Final Intern Evaluation Form and request that your supervisor fill it out and give it back to you. Submit it to the Internship Coordinator before the end of final week during the semester or session for which you are registered, along with

  • An essay of 4 to 5 pages (word processed and double spaced) in which you evaluate your internship. You will need to cover all of the following: (1) what you have learned from the job, very specifically, including technical skills, leadership skills, and personal skills; (2) what strengths and weaknesses you had when you started and when you finished the internship; (3) how you contributed to the company during your internship; (4) what new ideas you have about your future career as a direct result of the internship; (5) how you feel the company helps interns have a good learning experience, or how the company might have improved your learning exprience.
  • An undated version of the resume you submitted at the beginning of the process so that it includes a description of your internship.
  • Photocopies or samples of at least five clips or publications that show a range of the stories or other materials you produced during your internship.

You must submit all of the items in "Deadline 2" above to the Internship Coordinator before the end of final week during the semester or session for which you are registered. Questions? Contact the Internship Coordinator at pwjengl@d.umn.edu
