Teaching Assistantships as Part of the Master's Program in English

University of Minnesota Duluth Master of Arts students in English who hold teaching assistantships at UMD receive a great deal of support as they begin a challenging yet extremely rewarding classroom experience.
Teaching their own section of the first-year college writing course for the Department of Writing Studies, the TAs start with a full week of training prior to Fall semester. The TAs shadow an experienced faculty member teaching College Writing, are assigned a mentor from the Writing Studies Department faculty, take a course on composition theory and practice, and are invited to attend faculty development workshops on both teaching and technology.
The program is kept relatively small so that TAs become a close-knit unit, working, studying, socializing, and supporting one another year round.
English M.A. students who hold a teaching assistantship can expect to:
- receive up to 90% tuition remission (depending on the appointment)
- be eligible to apply for fellowships that can cover the remaining tuition
- receive semester stipends
- attend a one-week training session prior to the beginning of fall semester
- shadow an experienced College Writing teacher for one semester
- teach College Writing (WRIT 1120) to a section of 28 students per semester
- receive training in computer use in support of teaching writing
- be assigned an office and hold regularly scheduled office hours
- work with a teaching mentor from the graduate faculty
- tutor College Writing students
- study composition theory
- participate in faculty-training workshops
- attend department meetings
