UMD CHANCELLOR KATHRYN A. MARTIN DIRECTS MUSICAL
The Italian American Festival is coming to Duluth beginning on April 22 with the world premiere of The Secret of the Talking Bird, directed by UMD Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin. This world premiere musical, written by UMD Associate Professor Tom Isbell, is based on Sicilian fairy tale by Giuseppe Pitre.
The UMD Theatre will debut the musical at the Marshall Performing Art Center at 7:30 p.m. from April 22 - 24 and April 28 - May 1 with a 2 p.m. matinee on April 25.
Martin said she has enjoyed the chance to break away from her administrative duties for a few hours a day and actually work with students. "The actors are wonderful and we are having a great time putting this play together," she said.
"Basically the play is the story of three trials, which eventually are all successfully completed," Martin said. The plot starts when a dark spell is placed on a once-mighty kingdom. A queen is wrongfully imprisoned and only one creature can help: the Talking Bird. To reach him, Angelina and her brothers must climb the tallest mountain in the land, battling lions, giants and two evil aunts, aided only by eccentric hermits.
