Jean G. Blehart Distinguished Teaching Award

This honor is given each year to a faculty member who has made contributions to the teaching mission of UMD that are of extraordinary quality.

Paul Cannan, associate professor of English, College of Liberal Arts, is this year's recipient of the Jean G. Blehart Distinguished Teaching Award. Cannan received his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University in 1997. He enjoys teaching courses in Shakespeare, Milton, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century drama, the history of authorship, and Australian and New Zealand literature. He is the author of The Emergence of Dramatic Criticism in England: From Jonson to Pope (Palgrave, forthcoming). In 2002, he was awarded a University of Minnesota McKnight Land-Grant Professorship. He is currently completing a book on the publication history of Shakespeare's poems.

This honor is given each semester to recognize the research contributions of a UMD faculty member and to provide opportunities to present developing research to a broad UMD audience.

Outstanding Faculty Adviser Awards

Outstanding Faculty Adviser Awards are given each year to faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding service to their students.

Albert Tezla Teacher/Scholar Award
This award is given annually to a faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Fine Arts who has an exceptional and effective teaching style that emphasizes the worth of research in a learned discipline and the maturing impact scholarly activity has on the development of human attitudes and values.

Janice Kmetz, associate professor in Art & Design, is this year's recipient of the Albert Tezla Teacher/Scholar Award.

Janice Kmetz is an associate professor and Graphic Design Area Coordinator in the Department of Art and Design. She has a BS and MA Degrees in Visual Communication from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and completed her doctoral course work in 1996. Professor Kmetz continues a 29 year award winning regional, national and international career in the design profession. Her activities include project designer for the 3M Company, Metropolitan Council, City of Minneapolis Planning Department. Her client list includes major international corporations including Ford, Mazda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi - locally, Tweed Museum, Lake superior Brewing, Auto Trim Design. Janice developed the first computer generated imaging for automotive graphics and has upwards of 700 thousand vehicles produced with her designs. Additionally Janice has a 20 year history as a regionally exhibiting fine artist. Before coming to UMD Janice taught for 10 years at University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Bemidji State University. During her 11 years at UMD, Janice has taught 20 different courses including Graphic Design at both graduate and undergraduate levels, Graphic Design History and Fine Art. She has been very active in advising, supervising internships, graduate students and multiple UROP projects. Students and faculty alike consider Professor Kmetz a master teacher and scholar who is committed to the mentoring of her students.
