UMD Students Receive Advertising Scholarships
Six students will receive 2007-08 Lake Superior Advertising Federation (LSAF)
scholarships at the ADDY Awards banquet on February 23, 2008. Students were
challenged to create two promotional pieces and a creative strategy on the
topic of "Attracting & Retaining Young Adults in the Area"
for the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. More specifically, applicants
were asked to create a “top ten list” of reasons why Duluth
is a great place to live.
Tricia Gunderson, a UMD graphic design and Spanish major received one of
the $800 first place awards for her logo, website and billboard. She chose
the list: “Top Ten Ways to Make Duluth Your Town” as the content.
The judges were impressed because she took a unique slant for each of her
ten items. “Solve the murder mystery,” “swim in the lake
in july, or january,” and “smell the roses... all 3,000 of them”
were the headlines for items that included information about Glensheen,
a winter polar bear plunge in Lake Superior, and visiting the Rose Garden.
She also gave her campaign a logo and the slogan, “The Air is Better
up Here.”
Sharing in the first place award was College of St. Scholastica (CSS) student
Carrie Rust, an advertising and public relations major. Rust’s approach
included a video with objects flying into an open sports water bottle. The
bottle represented Duluth, and the objects going into it were adventurous
Duluth activities like skiing, kayaking, and catching live music. The slogan
for Rust’s campaign was “The Northland is Full of Opportunities.”

Four $100 second place scholarships were also awarded. The winning UMD
students were communication major Lindsey Marie Schloer, graphic design
major Sombath Tran, and communication major, Danielle Nagler. CSS advertising
and public relations major Leah Gordenier also received a second place
scholarship.
Each year, LSAF provides scholarships to students pursuing degrees in
advertising or related fields. Students who apply for the scholarship
prepare a creative strategy and two parts of a public service campaign
for a selected non-profit agency in the Duluth/Superior area. The non-profit
project changes every year. The mission of the scholarship is to provide
awareness of the economic and social value of advertising as well as award
the hard work of students who are actively trying to improve the community.
The competition was judged in December 2007 by three past presidents of
LSAF and David Hammer from the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.
