Fortune Brands' Craig P. Omtvedt will speak at 11 am on Thursday, October 2 in the Weber Music Hall as a part of the Fall 2008 LSBE Professor for a Day event.
Omtvedt received a BA in Accounting and Business Finance from LSBE in 1972 and has been the Senior Vice President and CFO of Fortune Brands, Inc. since 2000. He oversees the company's treasury, real estate, insurance, accounting and financial reporting, tax, internal audit, public affairs, and investor relations functions. He also currently holds a seat on the board of directors for General Cable Corporation and Oshkosh Corporation and is a National Trustee of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In a 2008 Institutional Investor magazine poll of portfolio managers, analysts and investment professionals, Omtvedt was voted one of “America's Best CFO's”.
"We are excited to have Craig come speak for us," said LSBE Dean Kjell Knudsen. "Fortune Brands is a national and international player so it will be a great learning experience for the students."
Omtvedt's talk, "Managing One's Destiny: Achieving Success in Today’s Corporate World," will focus on his own rise to success after graduating from UMD. He will talk about moving from various audit and controller roles at Sears, Roebuck & Company and The Pillsbury Company to becoming CFO and Senior Vice President of a Fortune 500 company.
Craig Omtvedt is an accomplished financial executive who has been at Fortune Brands' headquarters for the past eighteen years. He will share his personal experience and some of the insights gained during his career. The leading consumer brands of Fortune Brands include: Titleist, Cobra, FootJoy, Pinnacle in golf equipment; Jim Beam, DeKuyper, Knob Creek, Sauza and Courvoisier in distilled spirits; Moen faucets, Aristokraft and Schrock cabinets, Therma Tru doors, Simonton Windows and Master Lock padlocks in home products.
The public is invited to the event. Elaine Hansen, Director of the UMD Center for Economic Development encourages the business community to attend. "He's a Duluth native and he has a great message for young professionals in the region," she said.
Students will be able to benefit from the sharing of Omtvedt's experiences, the lessons he has learned and will recieve advice from someone who has risen to great success in his field. There will be refreshments served in the lobby of Weber Music Hall at 10:30 am before the session.
