Every Monday by 12:30 p.m., 50 select coaches submit their professional opinion about who they consider as the number one college hockey team in the nation for the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) poll.
For the third week in a row, the University of Minnesota Duluth has won the coveted title with 48 out of 50 votes confirming the number one placement, according to the USCHO poll. The Bulldogs also ranked first place in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine.
The USCHO poll is highly respected by athletes, coaches, and sports writers. The National Collegiate Athletic Association selects the coaches and media members who vote each year, and they evaluate each team before they place their vote. The criteria examined include the season statistics and the game schedule.
As of December 2011, the Bulldogs’ season is a school record-tying 14-game unbeaten streak (11-0-3) and best winning sports percentage with .750 off a 12-3-3 overall record. They will return to the ice to compete against Western Michigan University on Jan. 6-7 for a two-game non-conference series.
