Cat Brindisi as Penelope and Steven Douglas as Odysseus

One of the great works of ancient Western literature, The Odyssey, was written by Homer centuries after the fall of Troy. It is the story of Odysseus and his long journey back to Ithaca; an adventure with gods, myths and epic battles as he travels back home to his wife, Penelope.

UMD is performing this world premiere musical by Tom Isbell, an adaptation based on a translation by Samuel Butler with music by Louis Dunoyer de Segonzac and directed by Ann Bergeron. It will be held on April 21-23, 27-30 at 7:30 pm and on April 24 at 2 pm.

Odyssey Skies

In partnership with the Theatre Department, UMD's Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium is offering a special "Odyssey Skies" presentation beginning on April 20.

The Planetarium program highlights the literature, science, religion, and the philosophy of Classical Greece. Planetarium staff will point out how Odysseus navigated his travels by observing the stars. At one point in the text, the goddess-nymph Calypso tells Odysseus to keep the Bear constellation on his right hand side as he sails away from her island.

The “Odyssey Skies” Planetarium presentation will be held on April 20, 22, 25 & 26 at 7 pm and on April 24 at 12:30 pm. Free and open to the public.

Renovations at the UMD Planetarium

Considerable upgrades will take place this summer at the UMD Planetarium. Full-dome video, surround sound, and programmable lighting will usher in a new type of programming for Planetarium enthusiasts, astronomy scholars, and the general public. New theater seating and new video content are also included in the renovations. The Planetarium is expecting to exceed 9,000 in attendance in 2011.
