Three UMD men’s hockey players are in the running for the 2012 Hobey Baker Award. They are: Sophomore J.T. Brown, Senior Jack Connolly, and Senior Travis Oleksuk.

Fans are encouraged to vote for their favorite player at the Hobey Baker website. The first phase of fan balloting runs through March 4. The top ten list of candidates will be announced on March 15. Then phase two of fan balloting will begin on March 16 from the list of those Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists.

Award criteria include candidates emulating the exceptional character traits exhibited by the award’s namesake, Hobey Baker, a World War I flying star better known as America’s greatest amateur athlete in his day. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.

The Hobey Hat Trick of three finalists will be announced on March 29 and the final Hobey Baker Award announcement will be made April 6 during the NCAA Frozen Four Championships in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The UMD men’s hockey team continues to rank number one in the latest and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls as well as the Power Rankings.
