Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Undergraduate Standards

SAP review is done at the end of each term, including summer, after grades have been posted, to monitor your continued admittance to an eligible program and to measure both qualitative and quantitative standards.

Qualitative Standard: Grade Point Average (GPA)

• Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

• If your program requires a higher cumulative GPA, the higher requirement will be used to determine SAP financial aid eligibility.

The Office of Financial Aid and Registrar will review your GPA following four semesters of attendance at UMD (or the equivalence in semesters and quarters) or once you have earned 60 total credits (including all U of M transfer credits), whichever comes first.

Quantitative Standards: Credit Completion Ratio and Maximum Timeframe

• Undergraduate students must successfully complete a minimum of 75% of all credits attempted.

• Maximum Timeframe - Federal and state regulations limit the length of time a student can receive financial aid. You may not exceed 150% of the published length of your degree or certificate program without completing your degree or certificate. Students who change programs or who are pursuing dual degrees are still required to meet these timeframe requirements.

• Information about courses, credits, grades, and other factors used to determine your credit completion ratio and timeframe are listed in the Grades and Credits section.
