Disbursement of Funds

If you meet all of the eligibility requirements and have applied for financial aid at UMD, you can anticipate most of your financial aid funds to credit to your UMD student account as early as the dates listed below:

2011-2012 Academic Year Fall 2011 Spring 2012 Summer 2012
Note: Financial aid disbursements occur overnight on the dates listed above; you will see the funds credited to your UMD student account the next business day.
Graduate and Undergraduate Students 8/30/11 1/10/12 6/5/12
Medical Students 8/23/11 1/5/12 5/1/12
Pharmacy Students 8/30/11 1/10/12 5/8/12

If you have educational expenses, such as books or rent for off-campus housing, that are due before the date that your aid is disbursed, you will want to plan ahead to cover those expenses.

Electronic Credit

Most financial aid payments are credited electronically to individual student accounts. These payments include Federal Pell Grants, Minnesota State Grants, State Indian Scholarships, William D. Ford Federal Direct Loans, University Scholarships, Federal Perkins Loans, most private education loans, and other aid administered by UMD.

Your financial aid will be applied toward your tuition, fees and other charges on your student account. Other charges may include but are not limited to the following: University health insurance, late fees and/or any late or installment plan fees, housing and /or meal plan charges, and bookstore/campus store charges. Your financial aid is term-specific and will not pay any past due or prior year unpaid charges to your student account. It is your responsibility to pay any past due balance from previous terms at UMD.

If a credit remains in your account, you will receive a surplus check or direct deposit. Surplus checks are mailed to active addresses in the following order: current mailing, billing, home. Be sure to keep all of your addresses updated on the Student Self-Service Web page .

Paper Check Disbursement

The following types of aid will be disbursed as paper checks: some private scholarship checks, agency grants and scholarship checks (e.g., tribal, National Merit).

If your scholarship foundation sends your check to UMD, payable to you and the school, you will need to claim your funds at One Stop Student Services. Additional information on scholarship disbursement procedures is available in the scholarships section of our Web site.
