Loan Counseling

Entrance Counseling

Entrance counseling is a short, tutorial-style quiz that many students need to complete the first time they take out a student loan. If you are required to complete entrance counseling, it must be complete before your loan(s) can be disbursed.

William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Subsidized or Unsubsidized)

First-time borrowers must complete online entrance counseling. After you accept your loan(s), you will receive an E-mail directing you to our Web site to complete this requirement.

SELF Loan

First-time borrowers must complete entrance counseling through the SELF Loan Web site (http://www.ohe.state.mn.us/self/self.cfm).

Exit Counseling

If you have taken out federal loans during your attendance at UMD, you will need to complete exit counseling if you:

  • Withdraw
  • Graduate
  • Transfer to another school
  • Drop below half-time status

In many cases, exit counseling can be completed online. See UMD's Financial Collections Exit Interviews Web site (http://www.d.umn.edu/umdbo/exit.html) for the link to online exit counseling, and for additional details on how you can complete this requirement. The Financial Collections Office is located in 129 Darland Administration Building.
