Scholarships are a type of gift aid that generally do not need to be repaid. Funds are awarded to individual students and are often based on specific criteria, such as the student's major, GPA, financial need, etc. Many students receive scholarships from outside sources, such as hometown organizations, civic organizations, churches and other local donors, or from businesses and corporations. Several search options are provided on our Web site for students who wish to search for outside scholarship sources . Scholarship funds count toward meeting a student's financial need, which is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . A student's financial aid award(s) may be adjusted or changed based on scholarships received. All scholarships and outside assistance must be reported to the Office of Financial Aid and Registrar. Students are given the opportunity to report scholarships online when responding to financial aid award notices (eFAAN). Students can also report scholarships in person at the One Stop Student Services , or by sending an e-mail to umdhelp@d.umn.edu. Students are encouraged to report scholarships when they respond to their eFAAN; if a scholarship is not reported when awards are accepted, the student's aid will be adjusted later to reflect the scholarship. Most scholarship programs require full-time enrollment . If a student receives a scholarship from an outside donor that does NOT require full-time enrollment, the Office of Financial Aid and Registrar must receive written authorization from the donor before the funds can be disbursed. Scholarship funds from private donors are generally disbursed in two ways:
