Current Students: Advisement Philosophy

The purpose of academic advisement in the School of Fine Arts is to assist our students in the exploration and development of meaningful self-directed educational goals. Faculty advisors assist students with the design of their academic programs. In addition to guiding students toward completion of required coursework for a degree, advisors will help the students select courses capitalizing on their strengths and interests.

Students come to the School of Fine Arts with diverse needs and varied backgrounds. The school believes that this diversity calls for individualized mentoring/advisement as we guide our students to develop themselves into self-directed, independent learners.

Faculty advisors help students understand the University's expectations and foster in them a sense of independence as learners responsible for achieving their articulated individual educational goals.

Faculty advisors help students recognize their academic stengths and weaknesses, establish realistic educational goals, and identify the courses and resources necessary to achieve these goals.

Faculty advisors provide academic guidance by interpreting institutional requirements, recommending strategies for action, and referring students to other people or departments for assistance.
