The Alayne and Charles Berkins Scholarship
The Alayne and Charles Berkins Scholarship serves undergraduate Liberal Arts majors in Spanish, German Studies, and French programs in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at UMD.
The scholarship is to be used for tuition, books, fees, and/or other related educational expenses while attending UMD. This scholarship will be awarded to one student for use in his/her junior or senior year, and it will be based on 1) scholastic merit and 2) need. Students may receive this award up to two times.
The student will need a 3.0 GPA in his/her language program courses and a 2.75 GPA overall, at the time of the application and during the time of the scholarship.
Students will apply in the Spring semester durign their sophomore or junior year, for a scholarship which can be used the following year, during their junior or senior year. By the announced deadline, the students will write a short essay, in the target language, in which they explain 1) their foreign language studies to date, 2) their foreign language studies in the upcoming year, and 3) their future plans for after graduation. Students will also attach 1) an unofficial copy of their transcript, and 2) information detailing their economic situation in which they either show a copy of their completed FAFSA and a list of scholarships they are receiving or they detail how the scholarship will help financially.
The scholarship will be a minimum of $500 a year, and will be contingent upon the required GPAs being maintained after Spring grades have been posted.
Deadline for 2014: Monday, Feb. 17--submissions should be turned in to Humanities 457 by noon.
