Why is correct addressing important?

The St. Louis County Communications Center (911 Dispatch) asked if we would look into readdressing the campus to better match the numbering system of the surrounding community. The dispatch staff was having difficulty dealing with our non-standard addresses and had complaints that UMD’s addresses were confusing for emergency response crews. Around the same time, the University Fire Code Inspector told us we must begin to put building addresses on the outside of all our buildings. There were additional problems with East University Circle, several unnamed streets, as well as conflict with other governmental agencies. We decided that it was a good time to solve all of these problems at once to create a safer, more easily navigated campus.

How is mail currently delivered to campus?

The Post Office delivers any mail that says “University of Minnesota Duluth” or “10 University Drive” to Darland Administration Building’s mailroom. Facilities Management mailroom employees sort the mail by department and deliver it to each department’s main office.

The Post Office delivers any mail that has a residence hall address to Griggs Hall mailroom boxed by residence hall address. Housing employees then deliver it to each dorm and separate it into the residents’ mailboxes.

NRRI and Glensheen are the only off-campus buildings, within the City of Duluth, that have direct post office mail service.
I oversee my department's "Business Reply" mailings. Should I use my building addresses on these envelopes?

No. Business Reply Envelopes, Business Reply Cards and Courtesy Reply Envelopes are set up on a special system with the post office. These should still be run through the UMD Print Services office for addressing, zip codes and printing.

Where do I get business cards, envelopes, and letterhead?

Business cards, envelopes, and letterhead should be done through UMD Print Services. They can help you decide on how to layout the new addresses on your stationary so it works best for you. See their web site for business cards and stationery help.

Please let Print Services know if your office is not located in the same building as you department’s home office. It is important to remember that when used for mailing, the building address must be for the building in which your department’s home office is located. Your office room number can be your own office number as long as your department name is written before it.

If you are making your own mailing labels or mailing database (for use with windowed envelopes) it is best to restrict the address to only 4 lines. Addresses should include:

  • your name for sorting in your department
  • department name for hand sorting by FM mailroom
  • office room number (if in same building) for visitor use
  • department’s office building address for automatic sorting by the Post office
