------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: Do I have to attend Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash? A: Yes, Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash is a mandatory program for ALL incoming freshmen students. Move-in for students living on campus will begin on August 28. For those students on campus, there will be Rock Group meeting at 4:00 on Thursday. All students, including commuter & off-campus freshman, must attend the remainder of the Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash, August 29th - September 1. On Friday, the first required event of the day is your Rock Group meeting at 11:00 am. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: What are Rock Groups? What are Rockstars? A: Each new student will be assigned to a Rock Group. Rock Groups consist of 15-18 new students, led by a returning UMD student leader (Rock stars). Rock Groups are your foundation or home base for the weekend. In these groups you will get to know other new students, share meals, explore campus and Duluth, and have a place to ask questions or address concerns. We chose the name “rock group” and “rock stars” because, first, these groups and relationships are the foundational “rock” of the weekend for new students. Second, the language symbolizes the beautiful rocky shores of Lake Superior and the great starry skies of the North Woods. And last, but certainly not least, it’s awesome! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: Are parents allowed to stay for the whole program? A: We welcome parents to help their students get moved in and settled into their living spaces. We have programs running for parents and family on Thursday, August 28 and Friday, August 29. On Thursday, these include a workshop about financial aid and finances in college, a workshop for parents of students with disabilities, and a general parent program. On Friday, parents and family members are welcome to attend the Chancellors BBQ and Chancellor’s Welcome. PLEASE BE AWARE THERE ARE ONLY 800 SEATS AVAILABLE FOR PARENTS!!! First come first serve. That may seem to be a lot of seats, but we have 2200 students attending Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash. Please remember to say your farewells to your students before their 11:00 Rock Group meeting on Friday, August 28th. We encourage you to say goodbye to your student before their 11:00 Rock Group meeting on Friday, as the students will be heading straight into a full schedule of Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash activities starting with the Chancellor’s Welcome. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: As a parent, am I required to attend the parent specified programs? A: No, these programs for parents and families are offered to meet some of the interests and questions some families have posed. Parents and family members are not required to attend any of these programs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q:How do I know which 'Rock Group' am I in? A: You will be assigned a Rock Group after you register for your workshops. You will register for workshops in early August. (Please watch your UMD email for instructions!). You will receive by email information about which Rock Group you have been assigned. You will also be told the name of your student leader (your Rockstar) and the meeting location of your group. Please be sure to print this information, so when you arrive on campus you will know the location of your Rock Group meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q:Can I move into on-campus housing sooner or later than Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash? A: New students living on campus are welcome to move-in on Thursday, August 28 from 10:00-4:30. We strongly encourage new students to move in during this time so that they have time to settle in before all the activities and events of Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash begin. (If new students need to move in on a day other than Thursday, they may move in on Friday, August 29 th from 9:00-10:30am).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q:Do I need a dining plan in order to eat at the Dining Center during Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash? A: Lunch and dinner will be provided for all new freshmen during Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash, including lunch on Monday, September 1st. Regular meal plans will begin with dinner on Monday, September 1. Only students with breakfast in their specific dining plan have access to the Dining Center for breakfast. Commuter & off-campus students must travel to and from campus using their own means of transportation. Commuter and off-campus freshmen students who are renting or leasing an apartment or house are asked to be ready and moved in before Friday, August 29 th, the beginning of Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash. A: The college that is listed on your confirmation sheet will be the college you attend for the College Welcome during Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash. Please attend the college that you are enrolled in. Please contact your student affairs office for more information about changing colleges during the fall semester. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q:What are workshops? Are they required? A: You have the opportunity to choose three workshops to attend during Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash that engage your interests or concerns. There will be workshops offered in a wide variety of topics that will engage students in learning about UMD, achieving academic success, exploring the surrounding community, and making healthy decisions. Topics include getting involved in civic engagement, tackling test anxiety, doing well in college math courses, becoming a campus leader, getting a job on campus, and figuring out your college finances and financial aid, just to name a few. You must attend three workshops of your choice. Each workshop is one-hour in length. Students will register for workshops of their choice in early August. Watch your UMD email for instructions! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: Are evening activities required? A: The evening activities are going to be a lot of fun! Although most of the evening activities are not required, all new students will be required to attend Big Money on Friday night. During this time you will learn about financial management and get some great advice about common pitfalls that college students fall into in terms of their finances and credit. It is conducted in game show style—with cash prizes! We strongly recommend that you participate in as many activities as possible throughout the program. It is through these activities that you will meet other new students, current UMD students, and you will get a great sense of the many kinds of activities available for students during the year. See the schedule for information on what is required and more evening activities that may interest you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A: The Cooperative Institutional Research Program is the largest ongoing study of college students in the United States. All new students are required to take the CIRP. It helps the institution to get a better picture of our student body and thus gain more information to help design programs and curriculums that will better engage students in a rich educational experience. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q:How do I become a Student Leader and what are the roles of a student leader? A: Students have a positive and enjoyable experience while attending Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash. If you are a current UMD student and are interested in being a student leader for Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash 2008, contact the First Year Experience Office & Students in Transition. We are currently accepting applications to our wait list. The role of the student leader is to help assist Welcome Week & Bulldog Bash event coordinators, to serve as group facilitators, to answer students' questions, and to act as peer role models. If you are interested in becoming a student leader, please contact Student Coordinators; Kyle Ingebrigtson, Darren Nelson, & Malila Vang, (fye@d.umn.edu) or FYE Program Coordinator; Megan Perry-Spears (mpspears@d.umn.edu), 60 Solon Campus Center; 218-726-6393. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
