Student Leadership Positions in

First Year Experience & Students in Transition

OUR MISSION:
The First Year Experience & Students in Transition Program at UMD works collaboratively with students, faculty, staff and families to provide new students and those in transition with personal connections, knowledge and resources that will foster lifelong learning and participation in a diverse community. FYE & SIT is a part of the Division of Academic Support and Student Life at University of Minnesota Duluth.


STUDENT LEADERSHIP IN FYE & SIT:

First Year Experience & Students in Transition is one of the biggest providers of student leadership opportunities at UMD. Each year we work with more than 275 student leaders, who are a vital part of our programs and services. All leadership positions in FYE & SIT require a 2.5 minimum GPA. Applications and interviews are required for all positions; leadership positions are competitive. We offer volunteer positions, leadership positions for academic credit, internships, and paid leadership opportunities.

Teaching Assistants for SSP 1000: Introduction to College Learning (ICL) Course ICL TAs work in partnership with ICL Instructors. TAs help to plan and teach, provide support for students, and serve as a resource for new freshmen.  
     
Advisement & Registration Student Advisors Student advisors guide small groups of incoming students through the course selection and registration process, and provide a welcome to the UMD student experience.  
     
Advisement & Registration Panelist and Parent Tour Guide

Student panelists answer questions for new students and parents about their experiences at UMD. Parent Tour Guides help acquaint parents of new students with UMD as part of the A&R day.

 
     
Advisement & Registration Interns The next step up in A&R leadership, interns assist with planning and execution of the A&R program.  
     
Fall Semester Interns (not always offered) Students who are seriously considering a career in higher education/student affairs may do special internships during the fall semester. Offered when needed by the department.  
     
Bulldog Welcome Week Student Coordinator The highest leadership position with BWW, student coordinators spend their summer planning for the BWW events. Coordinators provide leadership throughout BWW and into the fall semester.  
     
Bulldog Welcome Week Rockstar (Student Leader) Rockstars are UMD undergraduate students who want to provide leadership in the UMD community. They welcome new students to UMD, build community, and help new students get oriented to campus.
