Advisement & Registration Program for Transfer Students

After admission to UMD, you can sign up for A & R: https://vcassl.d.umn.edu/fye/orientation

What is Advisement and Registration?
Advisement & Registration (formerly called Academic Orientation) is intended to give new transfer students an introduction to academic life at UMD. We recognize that transfer students bring with them diverse needs and experiences. Therefore, the program focuses primarily on the advisement and registration process while offering individual assistance and optional information as needed. During the program, new students are advised on degree requirements, receive information on how their previous credits will transfer to UMD, receive assistance in selecting and registering for fall semester classes, and receive a copy of their class schedule.

New transfer students may have several Advisement & Registration options, depending on the UMD major/college to which the student is admitted. Each of UMD's five undergraduate colleges offers at least one large Advisement & Registration session in person. Some colleges also offer individual or small-group sessions, online advisement and registration, or options via telephone. Your UMD college will provide you with additional information on your Advisement & Registration options.

Sometimes a college's large in-person Advisement & Registration sessions fill up. In that case, you will be scheduled for a small-group or individual session. Please rest assured that regardless of how your Advisement & Registration session is conducted, your college will provide you with the information and guidance you need to start your UMD education on the right foot.

Important Information About Reservation Deadlines
Please be aware that you have a fixed amount of time to respond to your invitation to Advisement & Registration, and therefore to secure your place as a UMD student.

The May 1, 2009, deadline to confirm your enrollment at UMD has temporarily been extended. Confirm an Advisement & Registration date today.

Since overall confirmations are reviewed on a weekly basis, UMD may choose to limit new confirmations at any time. If you are confirming after the deadline, you will be directed to contact the UMD Admissions Office to inquire about your status for fall 2009.

Reservations for Advisement & Registration
Invitations to Advisement & Registration are sent to students on a weekly basis starting in early February for students beginning at UMD in Fall 2009. Students must respond to the invitation to Advisement & Registration either by reserving a date online or by returning the reply form and the $40 confirmation fee. Upon receipt of your reply and fee, you will be sent a letter confirming your date and information regarding academic programs and financial aid.

All new students are required to pay a $40 fee the first time they register for classes at UMD. The fee is due when students return their Advisement & Registration reply form or when they reserve their orientation date online. The fee is non-refundable; students who cancel their admission to UMD will not receive a refund.

To reserve your Advisement & Registration date online, click here: https://vcassl.d.umn.edu/fye/orientation.
To reserve your Advisement & Registration date by mail, return your invitation reply form along with a $40 check to the address specified in your invitation.

Once you have signed up, you will recieve the following guide in the mail as a part of your confirmation packet:

Placement for Mathematics Courses
Many students at UMD are required to take courses in mathematics or statistics as part of their major of degree program. The required math or statistics courses for each major are listed in the UMD Catalog. It is important that students begin their study of mathematics in a course and at a level for which they are prepared. Sometimes this means first taking lower-level courses to prepare for a higher-level required math course.

If a student successfully transfers college credit to UMD for a college-level math course, the transferred course may determine math placement at UMD. For students who are not transferring a college-level math course and who are required to take a UMD math course, the UMD Department of Mathematics and Statistics will determine math placement via ACT/SAT score or by a math placement test. For more information, please contact the Swenson College of Science & Engineering at 218-726-7806 or at csesa@d.umn.edu.

On-Campus Housing
Students wishing to live in on-campus residence halls and on-campus apartments for the 2009-2010 academic year are encourage to complete and return the application/contract for on-campus housing prior to the May 1, 2009 deadline. The application/contract will be available online for you to download, print, complete and mail in to the Housing & Residence Life office. You will be able to access the application after you confirm for an Advisement & Registration session by paying your $40 Advisement & Registration (orientation) fee as noted above.

The housing application/contract allows students to indicate their preference for a housing assignment. Students who submit their completed application/contract before the priority date of May 1, 2009 will be assigned housing based on the original date of admission application. Students submitting housing applications/contract after the May 1 priority date will be assigned housing based on the date the housing application/contract was received by UMD and the availability of space.
