Watershed delineation at Camp Ripley, Minnesota

Funded by the Department of Defense. Dave Stark (Geology), Stacey Stark (Geography)

Camp ripley is approximately 58,000 acres and is bordered on the east by the Mississippi River and the north by the Crow Wing River. Water resources throughout the base include numerous lakes, streams and wetlands. The topography varies from flat sand plains along the Mississippi river to rolling topography where the St. Croix morraine bisects the northern portion of the base. The elevation varies from 330m to 460m.

Watersheds were needed for determining the best location to site training activities in order to protect water resources on the base. In addition, watersheds are being used to perform a GIS vulnerability of the base which identifies areas of heaviest use in terms of individual watersheds and as an input into a Watershed Modeling System (WMS)surface water model being prepared for the base.
