Patt Farrel is an Assistant Professor of Geography at UMD. "I am interested in the connection between people and the physical landscape. My research pays particular attention to the imprint of past cultures on their habitat, and to sleuthing "clues" buried in the environment about ancient peoples. My field work is primilarly in Maxico and Central America, where I collaborate with archaeologists to study the ancient Maya culture, through the medium of soil and sediment analysis. I also collaborate with local archaeologists on geoarchaeological investigations in Minnesota. Other interests include soil geography, physical geography education, and sciences education for girls. The courses I teach at UMD are Physical Geography, Environmental Conservation, Weather and Climate, and Geography of Soils.
