Charlie Matsch received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Maine in Orono, his MS from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, all in Geology. His Ph.D. dissertation was on the stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and geomorphology of Quaternary deposits of Southwestern Minnesota. He came to the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1970 and continued his studies of Quaternary geology, mainly in Minnesota. In 1975 he began a collaboration with his UMD colleague Dick Ojakangas on Late Precambrian glacial deposits in the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, and then, in 1979 on deposits in the Ellsworth Mountains of West Antarctica associated with the Late Paleozoic glaciation of Gondwanaland. His participation for many years in the Commission on Genesis and Lithology of Quaternary Deposits established by the International Union of Quaternary Research (INQUA) culminated in his co-editing with R.P. Goldthwait "Genetic Classification of Glacigenic Deposits", published in 1988.
