Fellow: Bryan Freyberg, M.S. graduate fellow in Mathematics and Statistics
Teacher: Cindy Welsh, Cloquet Middle School and High School, grades 7-12 Life Science and Directed Studies
The GK-12 fellowship has given me the opportunity to grow as an educator. Given that my experience in teaching was with 10th through 12th grade math students, I looked forward to a change of scenery having been paired with Cindy Welsh, an accomplished middle school science teacher. I was forced to adapt my growing knowledge of advanced mathematical concepts to a younger group of students. This adaptation was a challenge, for as any teacher who has taught both age groups knows; the difference in both behavior and the ability to think abstractly between the two groups is vast.
In addition to incorporating additional math concepts into Cindy’s existing life science curriculum, and developing and teaching inquiry-based lessons, I focused my energy on encouraging students to develop and pursue interests in the STEM areas. I found working individually with students on their science fair projects to be the most rewarding experience for both myself and for the students involved.
