Math & Science Graduate Fellows in K-12 Education

Fellow: Susan Karberg, M.S. graduate fellow in Geological Sciences
Teacher: Cindy Edwardson, 8th grade Earth Science and 7th grade Life Science, Cloquet Middle School

Cindy Edwardson teaches 7th grade Life Science and 8th grade Earth Science and has worked at Cloquet Middle School for 15 years. This year, Susan Karberg, an M.S. student in Geological Sciences helped students in 7th grade with creating and communicating student experimental science projects. Some of the student projects went to the Northeast Minnesota Regional Science Fair and the Insect Fair at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. The 8th grade course units received an upgrade, and some were taught by Susan, which greatly enhanced her communication skills. In addition to the many updates a new fossil lab was created! Susan also helped with lab activities in both Life and Earth Science classes.

Teams in Action

Curriculum

Erosion Activity

This activity is designed to have the students actively discover the different forms of erosion.

Deep Time!

Students create their own illustrated geologic time line with 5 meters representing 5 billion years of time.

Fossil Lab

Illustrating fossils encourages students to use their senses, and answer questions. Includes a stratigraphic column, used in conjunction with the lab, designed to help understand relative age dating.

Paleontology Powerpoint

This powerpoint supplements the Fossil Lab above. It contains place holders for the type of picture that belongs in each slide which can easily be found on the web.
