My experience at Cloquet Middle School has been fantastic. 7th
grade students are filled with enthusiasm and energy. They ask all
the questions there are to ask, they jump up and down when they know
the answer, and they'll be the first ones to tell you they like don't
like your new shoes. I've had a blast. Everyday has been fun, and I
think (hopefully not too immodestly) that the kids have gotten
something out of it too. We made Minnesota Native Plant posters for
the Invasive Species Conference at the Duluth Aquarium, the students
have learned a bit about my research on Menkes Disease, and we've
spent quite a bit of time on working on Science Fair projects. The
students did background research, designed and performed their own
experiments, graphed their data in Excel, and made Powerpoint slides
to print and display on posterboard. It's been really interesting to
see the kids become more savvy as the projects (and school year) have
progressed, using the computer more efficiently, employing the 'right'
scientific language, and presenting their own research proudly.
