My research is on celestial mechanics. My biggest challenge is figuring out how to talk about research in a meaningful way with kindergarten & 1st graders!

Teaching at the elementary school level was a challenging assignment. The most important skill I have acquired from this experience is to be ready to change directions during an activity. The students will see the lesson in a different way than I expect or will expand the activity to a higher level with their questions, which is wonderful, and is why it is crucial to never underestimate them.

My experience in the elementary school classroom has shown me that no matter how old a student is or at what level of schooling if he/she is learning a topic for the first time quite often the same questions arise.  I will take that experience with me when I return to teaching at the college level.
