Fellow: Seth Slettendahl, M.S. graduate fellow in Mathematics and Statistics
Teacher: Tim White, Duluth Denfeld High School, 10-12 grade Math
I have been working with Tim White’s Algebra 1, Pre-calculus, Calculus and the newly formed Pre-algebra classes. From the beginning, Tim and I truly saw eye to eye when it came to what we wanted the students to get out of this program. The first semester I mostly worked with Tim’s Calculus and Pre-calculus classes, showing them some high-level math problems and working through the problems with them. Also, each day I would bring a “Brain Warm-up,” a math or logic problem that really required heavy thought. As we start the second semester, we want to introduce our Action Research Plan, Math Drills, to Tim’s Pre-Algebra and maybe Algebra 1 classes.
I have enjoyed working with Tim this year. He and I have tried to find interesting and educational ways of showing the students what it is to be a mathematician; we’ve also tried to have some fun doing so too. I have really learned a lot about inquiry and what it takes to be a high school teacher. I hope to learn more about inquiry and what these students have to offer in the coming weeks.
