Math & Science Graduate Fellows in K-12 Education

Math & Science Graduate Fellows in K-12 Education
This innovative program provides graduate students in Mathematics, Geological Sciences, and Biological Sciences with education and training to:

  • become better teachers of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) knowledge
  • communicate successfully with K-12 teachers and students;
  • gain skills in working with public and non-technical audiences.

Fellows work with UMD faculty and K-12 teachers to define and meet the needs for improving STEM teaching. Fellows use their expertise and interests to collaborate with K-12 teachers, participate in K-12 classrooms, and create a variety of innovative, inquiry-based STEM exercises and projects.

Who May Apply for Academic year 2008-2009:
Students who have been accepted into, and are enrolled in, one of the biology, geological sciences, or mathematics graduate programs at the University of Minnesota Duluth in the Fall, 2008 may apply for this fellowship. The K-12 school partners for our program serve a large population of Native Americans students. We encourage Native Americans and people from other underrepresented populations to apply for this fellowship to serve as role models for students who may be inspired to pursue advanced studies in science and mathematics.

How to Apply:
First, all prospective fellows must apply and be accepted into one of the participating graduate programs. For information and program application procedures see the related links:

Second, to apply as a prospective GK-12 fellow, send a letter including a statement on interest, what talents or experience you would bring to the program, how participating in this project would support your career goals, and experience(s) that demonstrate your interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team with diverse perspectives, experiences and expectations. Also include a copy of your unofficial transcript and curriculum vitae.

Fellow section begins in February, so apply early.
