Building a Dobsonian Telescope - John Dobson is  “ an influential astronomer known in astronomy circles for his popular Dobsonian telescope design, used by a large number of astronomers. For as little as a few hundred dollars you and your students could build a 6", 8" or 10" telescope. A variety of plans are on the web. I googled "Making a Dobsonian telescope" and got several promising hits (there were more).
