Financing Graduate School

Teaching assistantships, research assistantships, Graduate School Fellowships, and loans are the most common forms of support for graduate students.

Graduate assistantships are awarded and administered through the individual programs; information should be obtained by contacting the director of graduate studies for the particular program to which you are applying.

Graduate assistant tuition benefits cover tuition and all or a portion of the University fee, according to the appointment percentage and the number of registered credits. University-subsidized health insurance is available to graduate assistants holding appointments of 25 percent or more. Nonresident students holding an assistantship of at least 25 percent for an entire term will be assessed tuition at the resident rates. Refer to Graduate Assistant Employment for additional information.

Graduate School Fellowships Graduate fellowships, awards based on academic merit, are available to new and currently enrolled graduate students. The Graduate School offers a limited number of fellowships to students with excellent academic records. Entering students should contact their prospective graduate program. Currently enrolled students should consult the Graduate School Fellowship Office and their graduate program office for current information on fellowship opportunities. Recipients of the Graduate School fellowship will receive a fellowship stipend plus full tuition. Eligible recipients are also covered by comprehensive health insurance, including subsidized dependent and dental care.

To qualify for the GSF competition, candidates must have completed an on-line application to the Graduate School, and be nominated by their program’s Director of Graduate Studies (DGS). Programs will prepare the GSF nomination packet, using material from the student’s application for admission. Please be advised that programs have their own internal deadlines to qualify for nomination. Therefore, if you wish to be considered for a Graduate School Fellowship, contact your program to determine the internal deadline for fellowship consideration. Additional information is available from the Graduate School Fellowship office.

Loans inquiries regarding loan funds, living accommodations, employment, and placement should be addressed to the vice chancellor for academic support and student life, 297 Darland Administration Building, University of Minnesota Duluth, MN 55812.
