TOEFL, MELAB, IELTS - English language assessment tests
The TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS is required of all international applicants whose native language is not English, regardless of U.S. Citizenship status, except those who will have completed 24 quarter credits/16 semester credits (within the past 24 months) in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher learning in the United States, or other English-speaking country, before entering the University of Minnesota. This requirement will not be waived.
An official report of the TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS scores should be sent to the Graduate School; the Twin Cities and Rochester campus TOEFL institutional code is 6874. The Duluth campus TOEFL institutional code is 6873. Please note that test scores may not be available for 4-6 weeks after you take the test, and plan accordingly.
The operational standard for admission to the Graduate School is a score of at least 79 on the Internet based TOEFL with section scores of 21 on writing and 19 on reading (550 on the paper based TOEFL), or a score of 6.5 on the IELTS or 80 on the MELAB. Please note that individual programs may have higher TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS requirements.
All English language test scores are valid for up to two years.
You can send our office a copy of your examinee's score report and we will attempt to verify it. Some scores cannot be verified because of the format which the the testing service uses. If we are unable to verify the scores, we will ask you to have the testing service send us an official score report. You can send this via post, fax, or email attachment. If you choose email attachment, please make sure the file is a .pdf or .jpg format and is sent to the email address of gsquest@umn.edu
