UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants to Graduate School programs at the University of Minnesota Duluth must provide evidence of English language proficiency. The operational standard for admission to the Graduate School is a score of at least 79 on the Internet based TOEFL with section scores of 21 on writing and 19 on reading (550 on the paper based TOEFL), or a score of 6.5 on the IELTS or 80 on the MELAB; individual programs may have higher TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS requirements.
The TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS is required of all international applicants whose native language is not English, except those who will have completed 24 quarter credits/16 semester credits (within the past 24 months) in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher learning in the United States before entering the University of Minnesota. This requirement will not be waived.

Overseas MELAB testing is available on a limited basis in selected countries. An official report of the TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS scores should be sent to the UMD Graduate School Office; our TOEFL instituional code is 6873.
NOTE: Please bear in mind that test scores may not be available for 4-6 weeks after you take the test, and plan accordingly.
