UMD Health Services Calendar of Events, Spring 2012 (April)

RESCHEDULED!! Now, TUESDAY, April 24.  Fitness 101: An Introductory Workshop.  11-12, Sports and Health Center 135.  This fitness workshop is designed to teach basic fitness skills which can be used at home or in the gym.  Topics covered in the workshop will include proper warm-up, exercises to build strength and cardio, proper cool-down, nutrition basics, and more! No experience necessary!

Wednesday, April 18th.  ‘Epic Fail’ : How video games and Internet overuse can create problems with college students.  1:30-3pm, Kirby student center 268.  Hosted by UMD Health Services’ Counseling Department.  The overall goal of workshop is to educate students on how to recognize when use becomes a problem.  The research-based workshop will include why video games and internet can be so appealing and addictive and will discuss some of physical, emotional, and interpersonal warning signs that it may be a problem.  Participants will leave with information on self-help skills as well as where to go to get help. Prizes!!

Saturday, April 21- Saturday, April 28th.  Join the MOOvement towards sustainability!  This week-long series of events will focus on the important connection between sustainably grown foods and the community.

April 21st:  CHAMPS day of service at the UMD Farm.  Join the Sustainable Agriculture Project for a day of fence building, and planting preparation at the UMD Farm.   For more information, http://www.d.umn.edu/outreach/civic/CHAMPDayReg.html

April 23rd:  This day marks the beginning of the MOOvement in the Center Court Restaurant to provide locally raised, grass-fed beef hamburgers!!  Stop in and try one this week, and you’ll be coming back for more.  The sustainable meat producer, Troy Salzer, will be available for a “Meat and Greet” in the restaurant, on Monday, April 23rd, from 11:30-12:30. April 26th:  Special “local foods” dinner in the Dining Center for the housing residents, the campus community and the public.  The dinner will highlight hamburgers made from locally raised beef from Troy Salzer’s Sandy Hills Ranch in Barnum.  The dinner will also serve homemade wild rice burgers, and Juneberry-rhubarb crisp.  The juneberries were picked right on the UMD campus!! Roasted potatoes and other sustainably grown vegetables from the Fisher-Merritt Farm in Wrenshall, and Sandy Hills Ranch of Barnum, will be served as well.  Dining hours, 4:30-7pm.  Cost: $8.90 plus tax. April 28th:  As part of the 3rd annual Community Wellness Day, Joel Salatin will provide a presentation about his Polyface Farm operation in Virginia that highlights unique approaches to sustainable farming.  See below for more information.


Saturday, April 28. Community Wellness Day. Romano Gym. 11am-3pm.  The 3rd Annual Community Wellness Day is a community collaboration aimed at promoting four key aspects of Community Wellness:  Health, Safety, Financial literacy, and Environmental Awareness. There will be approximately 60 vendors representing these topics. There will be many activities for children, including rock climbing!  Also, Joel Salatin has been invited to be the keynote speaker, and will speak from 1-2:30pm in the Marshall Performing Arts Center.  Mr. Salatin is a sustainable farmer from Swopes, Virginia.  He has been featured in the documentary "Fresh: the Movie", Michael Pollan's New York Times bestselling novel "The Omnivore's Dilemma", and the Academy Award nominated/best selling independent documentary of all time "Food, Inc.".   The event is a fundraiser for a local charity, the Damiano Kids Café.  Free and open to all! The recommended parking options are on University Drive, which is accessible via College Street or St. Marie Street. Please do not park in Gold Lots.
