 University Honors

Admissions

University Honors is looking for the most highly motivated students in all disciplines at UMD who want to participate actively in their education. It attempts to bring together students with diverse talents, interests, and experiences.

Incoming Freshmen:

Who can apply? If you have and a cumulative high school GPA 3.4 or above or an ACT score of 24 or above you are eligible to apply to University Honors.

When should you apply? We begin accepting applications from high school seniors for the upcoming fall semester almost a year in advance starting the November prior. Incoming freshmen are asked to apply to the program by no later than May 1. Students must be accepted to the University of Minnesota Duluth before they can apply to University Honors. We make offers on a rolling basis starting in late March or early April and ending once we have filled all of our seats. Therefore early applications are more likely to be successful. Although we encourage incoming freshmen to live in the UH section of Ianni Hall, it is not a requirement of the program.

What should you include in your application? We evaluate applicants on four criteria. Most important is the essay, followed by your GPA and ACT/SAT scores, your recommendation letters, and your list of extracurricular activities.  We have access to your GPA and ACT scores, so applicants must submit three things via email to hons@d.umn.edu:

  1. An essay that answers the following question: Why do you want to be a part of University Honors?

    • Essays should be no longer than 1000 words, roughly two single spaced pages

  2. Three recommendation letters from professional or educational contacts
  3. A separate list of all extracurricular activities engaged in throughout high school (do not list these in your letter)

    • Be sure your name is on all pages of your application materials.

Where should I send my application materials? Send your application materials via email (as Word doc attachments) to: hons@d.umn.edu. All letters of reference should be emailed to University Honors by the authors of the letters. Essays should be emailed by the applicants.

Current UMD students:

Who can apply? If you are a freshman or sophomore by credits and have a cumulative University of Minnesota GPA at or above 3.3 you are eligible to apply to University Honors. Once you are a junior or have less than two years until graduation you are no longer eligible to apply to begin in University Honors.

When should you apply? As a current student you can apply for admittance into University Honors at any time before the beginning of your junior year. We will make offers based on seat availability as we receive them.
