Coaching Minor Application Information

  1. Rationale for the Minor Program at UMD:
    • To provide a mechanism to verify the course of study in interscholastic coaching on the student's transcript.
    • To follow the National Association for the Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) guidelines, which focus on the improvement of the quality of coaching through the development of increased standards and skills.
    • To upgrade the student's professional qualification for greater competency in today's job market.
  2. All students must first be admitted to the minor program prior to enrolling in the required coursework. Forms are available online but students will need to set up an appointment with the Coaching Coordinator in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation once these forms have been completed to further discuss the program. Both forms need to be signed by the Coaching Coordinator. The Application Form will be given to the Coaching Coordinator and the Enrollment Form will be returned to the CEHSP Student Affairs Office located in BohH 120.
  3. Post baccalaureate students seeking the minor must also complete the application form, re-enroll at UMD and have their transcripts evaluated.
  4. Due to the heavy commitment of time and energy, students who are currently student teaching are encouraged NOT to enroll in the coaching practicum during the same semester.
  5. Students enrolled in the coaching minor do not need "permission numbers" for specific classes unless the course if full. Students should contact the specific instructor for closed classes to possibly get a "permission number" to enroll.
  6. Students must complete a minimum of 15 credits in the coaching minor program and pass HLTH 1600, CC 3117 or be CPR/First Aid certified prior to entering the coaching practicum.
  7. Students need to discuss their plans for their practicum with the Coaching Coordinator ONE SEMESTER prior to starting this course.
  8. Transfer students must take a minimum of one-third (6 credits) of the coaching credit course work at UMD.
