Prospective Students

Preparing a Path

We prepare students for careers as research scientists, technicians, primary, secondary and post-secondary educators, and future college faculty in the biological sciences.

We do this by supporting our students and making sure they get experience with cutting-edge technology so they can succeed in academic, industrial and governmental settings.

Application Basics

Applications to the Integrated Biosciences Graduate Program are only accepted for fall admission.

Instructions are available on the U of M Graduate Program site

The Office of Admissions is responsible for processing all applications for admission and applications for readmission/change of status for the 132 graduate programs that are part of the Graduate School.

Our office provides information about and assistance with the application process to students, faculty, and staff. We also issue the form I-20 for international students admitted to the Graduate School.

Introduce Yourself

An important part of the application process involves talking to faculty and students in the program. Feel free to contact them with questions and/or to arrange a potential campus visit.

Although not a program requirement, you are strongly encouraged to be in direct contact with any IBS faculty members with whom you wish to work. The availability of IBS faculty members accepting new graduate students varies in any given year.

Opportunity for Underrepresented Groups

Diversity of Views & Experiences (DOVE) Fellowship

The Graduate School Diversity Office administers the DOVE Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded to approximately 20 first-year students from underrepresented groups within a specific graduate program (U.S. citizens or permanent residents).

The fellowship provides a $25,000.00 stipend, tuition at regular graduate school rates (up to 14 credits per semester), and subsidized health insurance for one academic year. Graduate programs must nominate prospective students by 12:00 noon, Friday, February 4, 2022.

Students who wish to be nominated must contact the Program Coordinator and the Director of Graduate Studies in advance. The recipients of the DOVE Fellowship are encouraged to participate in the Community of Scholars Program.
