LeAne Rutherford has had a lengthy and productive association with learning and teaching and with the University of Minnesota Duluth. She received her M.A. in English there in 1966, taught in the Duluth Public Schools for 11 years and at UMD for 34 years. Sixteen years of them were spent teaching a dozen different writing courses for the Department of Composition. For the past 19 years she has been an instructional development consultant and newsletter editor.

She wrote, edited, and published 28 issues of Instructional Development , published 42 articles (both academic and commercial), participated in and chronicled the technological growth of UMD, edited countless manuscripts for faculty members, made 20 conference presentations, attended and/or assisted with 100 workshops, conducted International and National Graduate Teaching Assistant Orientations, served on 8 community agencies/organizations, worked with Japanese M.B.A. candidates to prepare them for entry into American academic life, and received numerous grants.

Shelley Smith received her MS in Communication Studies from Portland State University and her Ph.D. in Intercultural and Diversity Communication from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She has been actively engaged in teaching and training in academia since 1984. She has taught undergraduate and graduate communication courses, and was an Education Specialist at the UMTC's Center for Teaching and Learning Services for nine years where she was a graduate instructor for the Preparing Future Faculty and ITA programs, and a facilitator for the Midcareer and Internationalizing the On-Campus Curriculum Faculty programs. She has been an Education Consultant doing on-site consultation, customizing and configuring of ePortfolio software, and providing on-line and on-site training, and has also been a faculty trainer and program developer for the Program for Nations in Transition in Ukraine.

As a Duluth native, Jason Ellis is no stranger to UMD. A few years after graduating from UMD, he began working here through an AmeriCorps position with the Darland Connection as a coordinator of UMD student volunteers. After two years in this position, he was offered a temporary administrative assistant position with the Darland Connection and the Office of Civic Engagement. A few months later he was hired as a full-time administrative assistant, sharing his duties with the Instructional Development Service, the Office of Civic Engagement, and the Darland Connection. A goal of Jason's had always been to work in an academic setting, especially at UMD in his hometown of Duluth.

  4. assist faculty when we can provide useful assistance and suggest other resources to meet needs we cannot address.
