Action Steps

After spring semester 2008 the University of Minnesota Duluth will no longer offer the Foreign Studies courses, Fst 2929 and Fst 4949, required for the Foreign Studies Minor. Students who have not completed both courses by the end of Spring 2008 semester will not be eligible for the minor.

See the UMD catalog and speak with your advisor to select an alternate minor offered at UMD.

Students who have completed both courses by spring semester 2008 must complete all other requirements to earn the minor by graduation.

Upon being accepted into your study abroad program, check in with the International Education Office and pick up a packet of materials. Complete the materials and meet with a study abroad advisor.

  1. Two books are required for those courses.

** Maximizing Study Abroad: A Students’ Guide to Strategies for Language and Culture Learning and Use by R. Michael Paige, Andrew D. Cohen, Barbara Kappler, Julie C. Chi, & James P. Lassegard. This book addresses general issues most students studying abroad encounter when adjusting to life in a foreign culture. To order, go to the following site.

    ** Culture Shock! xxxx.
Graphic Arts Center Publishing publishes a renowned series of books for individuals planning to move to a new country. The books in the Culture Shock! series are among the most useful for travelers staying longer than the typical tourist. The titles in the series are all titled “Culture Shock!” followed by the name of the country. For example, Culture Shock!— Sweden. The appropriate Culture Shock! book for your country can be ordered at UMD, local bookstores, or at any of the online bookstores. If you discover that no Culture Shock! book is published for your particular country, contact Michael Sunnafrank and a different country text will be assigned.
Students participating in the UMD Study in England Programme need to purchase "Notes from a Small Island" by Bill Bryson instead of the Culture Shock book.
