  1. Call the local authorities (ambulance, police, etc.)
  2. Contact your family
  3. Contact the local foreign program coordinator
  4. Contact the appropriate program coordinator at UMD, during office hours, 8:00-4:30 Central Standard Time Zone

What constitutes an emergency?

Emergencies are those that pose a genuine and sometimes immediate risk to, or that have already disturbed the safety and well-being of study abroad program participants. Emergencies include those situations involving a single program participant, multiple program participants, or all program participants.

These include:

  • Physical assault
  • Disappearance, taken hostage, or kidnapping of a student
  • Robbery
  • Sexual assault or rape
  • Serious illness, physical or emotional
  • Significant accident and/or injury
  • Hospitalization for any reason
  • Terrorist threat or attack
  • Local political, natural or man-made crisis/disaster that could affect the students’ safety or well-being
  • Arrest or questioning by the police or other security forces
  • Any legal action (lawsuit, deposition, trial, etc.) involving a student
