 INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION OFFICE

Insurance

The University of Minnesota (all campuses) requires mandatory international health insurance for students participating on education abroad opportunities. Insurance is provided through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). Enrollment and payment will vary based on the international program or activity:
  • UMD Study Abroad Program Participants
Cost of the insurance is included in the UMD program fee for UMD study abroad programs, and students will be automatically enrolled in the insurance by their study abroad advisor.
  • Study Abroad Participants on Other Programs
Students arrange to purchase insurance through the International Education Office when studying on programs coordinated by a non-University of Minnesota campus. Accepted study abroad participants complete a CISI enrollment application found on their online checklist. Students will be billed the appropriate charges on their UMD student account.
  • Participants on other International Activities
All University of Minnesota students are required to receive CISI insurance for any overseas travel related to their education. Such opportunities include, but are not limited to, research, internships, performances, etc. Apply for the insurance by completing the Release and Waiver and CISI application forms.
Details about CISI insurance
Students covered by the University's CISI policy will receive an email which will allow them to log in and view their detailed policy, print an insurance card with coverage dates, and access further international health and safety information. The current CISI health insurance policy can also be viewed here:

In order to minimize the need for on-site medical and dental expenses, we strongly encourage students to see a doctor and dentist prior to departure. Since most insurance plans require that services be paid for up front and be reimbursed later, we also advise that students budget some money for medical situations while in-country.

Keep in mind that the international health insurance coverage will start and end based on the education abroad program/activity dates. If students extend their travels, they must purchase or maintain a separate insurance plan.

We strongly recommend that students consider retaining their US health insurance, even while overseas. This will cover them both before departure and after returning from the program, and should a student have an accident or illness overseas that requires long-term care, they will have insurance upon their return to cover these expenses. Students may find it difficult to purchase a health plan if they return with what the insurance companies consider a pre-existing condition. If students have special insurance needs, or if they plan any personal travel before, during or after the program, they are responsible for the coverage. It is their responsibility to ensure that they have adequate insurance coverage for their particular circumstances.

University of Minnesota students should be aware that they are not automatically covered by the University's Health Plan while on a study abroad program. Contact our office for answers to any questions during your time abroad.
