Know the following program information, which you will provide on the online application:

Country: Ghana
Program Name: Global Sustainability Experience in Design and Manufacturing in Ghana

Program Information
Explore sustainability in manufacturing and design in Ghana. Students will be exposed to leaders in sustainability and alternative business and manufacturing methods, which will be reinforced by visits to local manufacturing facilities, art centers, museums and historical villages.

Students will design and manufacture products using local environmentally friendly materials, such as bamboo.
Eco-tool audit software is used to analyze and select materials and manufacturing processes at the design stage that have low environmental impact and are energy efficient.

This program will describe sustainability in design and manufacturing, discuss resource consumption and its drivers, analyze material life cycles, demonstrate the selection of eco-informed materials and processes for manufacturing a product; conduct eco-audits, analyze
eco-data, and discuss the relationship of legislation with sustainability.

Cultural activities including dance, keyboarding, textile dying, and basket-making are integrated into the experience.

Professors from the University of Minnesota Duluth and Kwame Nkruma University of Science and Technology will jointly teach this course.

Location Information
The program is centered in Kumasi, Ghana. It is located near Lake Bosomtwe, in the Rain Forest Region. It is popularly known as the “Garden City" or the "heart beat" of Ghana.

Due to large gold deposits that have been mined in the area, Kumasi is among the wealthier cities in Ghana.  The city's major exports are hardwood and cocoa. Kumasi has 50% of Ghana’s the timber industry. The Kaasai Industrial Area plays an important role in industry in the region.

Features of the city include the Kumasi Central Market, Tafo Kumasi, Fort Kumasi, Kumasi Zoo and the Kumasi Hat Museum.  Kumasi is also home to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology of Ghana, the hosting institution of this program.
