Know the following program information, which you will provide on the online application: Program: International Student Teaching
Program Information A professor from a local college at the host location will supervise participants. A local coordinator is responsible for arranging housing for participants. Participants will be placed with a local family, at a boarding house or in an apartment. During the first weeks of the program, UMD faculty will visit each participant. The purpose of the visit is to observe student teachers in their classrooms, review expectations with cooperating teachers, review housing placements, and resolve participant issues.
Galway, Limerick or Newbridge, Ireland Teach in one of these three Irish cities. Ireland is the third-largest island in Europe. The country has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable oceanic climate, which avoids extreme temperatures. Irish culture has had a significant influence on other cultures, particularly in the fields of literature, science and education. A strong indigenous culture exists and is expressed through sports, music and language. Common Western culture also abounds, such as contemporary music and drama, sports such as soccer, rugby and golf, and the English language. Ljubljana, Slovenia Teach in the country’s capital city at an international school that teaches all classes in English. Slovenia is a country in Central Europe touching the Alps and bordering the Adriatic Sea. The official language of Slovenia is Slovene, however, most people speak English. Unlike other Slavic cultures, the Slovenes have been greatly influenced by German and Austrian cultures, a result of centuries of rule by the Austrian Habsburgs. Italian influence is also evident in the regions that border Italy. Slovenia occupies an area about the size of the state of Massachusetts. It is largely mountainous and almost half of the land is forested, with hilly plains spread across the central and eastern regions.
