UMD Programs in IrelandThe University of Minnesota Duluth offers short-term programs to Ireland. Mass emigration followed in the wake of the Great Famine in the mid-19th century and continued until the 1980s. However, the Irish economic experience reversed dramatically during the course of the 1990s, which saw the beginning of unprecedented economic growth in Ireland, in a phenomenon known as the "Celtic Tiger.” In 2005 the Ireland was ranked the best place to live in the world according to a quality of life assessment by The Economist magazine. Students participating in this May session program in Ireland will learn about the country, history and culture as well as a foundation in innovation and entrepreneurship. Students will attend lectures by Irish faculty members, spend time at mutli-national corporations and travel throughout the country extensively. The International Student Teaching experience is an eight-week placement for early childhood, elementary education and secondary education candidates in varying country around the world. Students are placed in local or international schools, which provide a contrasting experience to time spent in classrooms in the United States.
